Testing Spirulina

In SIngapore, Spirulina is classified as a food additive. To qualify such products for sale and consumption, we require heavy metal and microbiological testing. Microbiological testing requires proper lab equipment and chemicals which are harder to acquire. Hence, we started with heavy metal testing. Heavy metal testing can be done with simple test kits made for drinking water. Water quality test kits usually come in the form of inkblot tests which requires a small sample of the solution.

Working with MQTT

I decided to set up an environmental monitoring device with my Spirulina farm. It uses the enviro plus hat for raspberry pi. I decided to take this opportunity to work with GCP’s IoT Core and PubSub services. PubSub allows me to use the publisher subscriber model to connect various MQTT nodes together and allow me to work with my data flexibly. My first goal was to create a dashboard which would allow me to view my sensor data. Eventually, I would like to create a farming system for Spirlina.
